Whoever chose the colour scheme for Cuba’s capital city deserves our heartiest of congratulations too (even though it was all a happy accident). There are very few blandly coloured structures in the country, and little consideration has been given to symmetry of colour too (and this is a wonderful thing). Pastel-painted mansions sit next to houses painted in bold, primary colours creating a contrast that will make you want to understand how to use all the features your camera can offer you. The colourful locals also make for unique photography subjects, as they go about their daily business.

At 11am, it’s time to meet Vincent Long, your host and instructor, and your local English-speaking guide. Vincent taught photography in Melbourne, Australia’s cultural capital, from 2011 until 2015. In addition to this, he spent the best part of a decade as part of a dedicated team documenting the jaw dropping beauty of UNESCO World Heritage sites around the world (such as the one you’re about to discover for yourself – Old Havana). Vincent calls Havana a second home, and will be ably assisted by a local English-speaking Havana tour guide who will be on hand to answer any questions you might have about Havana.

●      This Havana Photography Day Tour is ideal for all levels of skill, from beginners through to experienced enthusiasts.

●      It’s perfect if you have an avid interest in taking better photos, and want to go beyond simply using the automatic settings on your digital camera.

●      We recommend that you bring a digital DSLR or a camera with manual, adjustable settings to get the most out of this tour.

●      With a maximum of just 8 people, you’re never going to feel crowded when it comes to finding the perfect position to take a photo.

Itinerary

Our Havana Photography Day Tour will run from 20th November to 9th December, except on Sundays
Each tour begins at 11am and finishes after sunset

Meeting at the Statue of St Francis of Assi in the aptly named Plaza de San Francisco (which well might end up being your first photo of the tour), Vincent and your tour guide will talk you through the day you’re about to experience, including some hints and tips on the do’s and don’t’s of photography Havana.

Now it’s time to dive right into your Havana Photography Day Tour

Old Havana

Much of Havana’s lavish Old Town has been documented by the many visitors who stroll her sun-drenched streets, and there will be ample opportunities to stop and take photos as the tour gently moves along. It’s important to get off the beaten track, to capture a side of the city that might not be so common in photos of the Cuban capital, as is the case with one of the first stops – the low-key icon that is the Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym. The apartments that surround the gym have seen better days, and you’ll want to document their dilapidated beauty. Part of the gym is open air, so you can capture boxers in motion under the late morning sunshine as they train to become the next Cuban hero.

From here the tour will continue to the markets at Calle Sol, where you will see the hustle and bustle of the city in full swing, with visitors who come here to experience city life mixing with locals who come here for more pragmatic reasons. Next it’s time go to Plaza Vieja. Take in the grand homes that frame this square, paying particular attention to the balconies. This was once one of the wealthiest parts of the city, and it was a distinguished status symbol to have your own balcony from which you could watch the comings and goings in the square. You might want to take a break from taking photos during lunch, but since this will take place at a sublime rooftop venue, you will probably want to snap a few photos of the city from above.

Plazas and Classic Cars

After lunch, it’s time to hit the streets once again to continue your Havana Photography Day Tour. Continuing your journey through the plaza’s that define the cityscape of Havana, you will go through the Plaza de Armas and the Plaza Catedral, before continuing to Bodeguita del Medio, a typical example of an authentic Cuban restaurant. The largest green space in the city (Parque Central) is next on the agenda, and hopefully you will be able to document one of the many baseball games that take place in the park. After taking in the looming beauty of El Capitolio, the former seat of government (which was inspired by the Panthéon in Paris) you will need to rest your legs (although not your camera).

You’ll presumably already have taken a few photos of the beautiful four-wheeled beasts that roam the city, and now it’s time to take a ride in one of Havana’s famous classic cars. You’ll cruise along the Malecón, the winding oceanfront esplanade that runs along the harbour. Stopping at the faded glamour of the Vedado neighbourhood and the austere socialist architecture of Plaza de la Revolución, your destination is in fact El Morro, the somberly beautiful fortress that sits at the entrance to the harbour (designed to protect Havana from pirates and other threats). The fortress is worthy of your camera’s attention, but this spot also allows you to capture panoramic shots of the city herself during sunset.

You will then be taken back to the Plaza de San Francisco at approximately 6:30pm, where you might want to find a quiet spot to enjoy a drink and review the numerous beautiful shots you’ve taken throughout this magical day on our Havana Photography Day Tour.
